Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan for underground lifting
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for conducting underground lifting operations and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret and clarify work requirements in the form of shift briefings, handover details or work orders before proceeding
   • Develop a preliminary underground lifting plan or site sketch
   • Check and confirm job feasibility and schedule with the client and other relevant persons
   • Confirm and check elimination/control measures for hazards associated with the use of cranes and other load moving equipment with appropriate parties
   • Finalise and confirm the underground lifting plan, including the scheduling of required resources
2. Prepare for underground lifting
   • Identify, select, inspect, assemble and certify underground lifting equipment, materials and tools required
   • Label unserviceable equipment, materials and tools in accordance with Mine Managers Rules and Schemes
   • Select and prepare appropriate anchors in accordance with the Strata Control Plan
3. Move loads
   • Identify and confirm appropriate safe working loads and centre of gravity
   • Direct the movement of the load in an underground environment using standard signals for load moving
   • Connect lifting gear to load
   • Connect load to movement device using appropriate and certified equipment
   • Ensure stability of the load by application of load movement procedure, temporary bracing and/or load support
   • Follow appropriate specifications during the placement and securing of the load
   • Dismantle and remove/restore load shifting equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient conducting of underground lifting operations, including:

selecting and using the required tools and equipment

identify and label unserviceable equipment, materials and tools

demonstrates completion of the conduction of underground lifting operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

develop a preliminary lifting plan which includes a minimum of five (5) of the following:

confirmed details of underground lifting requirement

confirmed dimensions

site access and egress

suitability and availability of materials

tools and equipment

identification of potential hazards

probable control measures

identification of site coordination requirements

selecting and preparing appropriate anchors

identifying and confirming appropriate safe working loads and centre of gravity

directing the load using appropriate signals

connecting load to movement device

applying load movement procedures to ensure stability of the load

dismantle and remove or restore load shifting equipment

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting underground lifting operations through:

work health and safety

site and equipment safety

record maintenance and reporting

hazard identification

operational and maintenance activities

relevant hand tools

equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

using hand signals
